Reiki defined

Reiki involves the channeling of energy to client through practitioner in order to enhance the body's natural ability to heal itself via balancing the natural life force energy within the body. It is a holistic, natural, hands-on healing system that touches on all levels.

On the physical level, Reiki can accelerate the body's natural healing process. Reiki may also support the release of held emotion yet promote an overall sense of calm. Unconscious or outgrown beliefs and attitudes may present themselves for re-evaluation. Awareness of personal connection to a greater spirit may be experienced. Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of healing and self-improvement that treats the whole person.

Due to the calming effect, Reiki treatments are used increasingly in hospitals for patients and staff. A few examples of Canadian health care facilities offering Reiki are:

  • Mt. Sinai Hospital’s Marvelle Koffler Breast Centre, Toronto, Ontario
  • Princess Margaret Hospital (University Health Network) Toronto, Ontario
  • Bruce House AIDS hospice (Ottawa, Ontario)
  • Sandy Hill Community Health Centre (Ottawa, Ontario)
  • Ottawa Integrated Cancer Centre (OICC)

Reiki as primordial consciousness

Primordial consciousness is the source of the healing pulsations we call Reiki. The term Reiki also refers to primordial consciousness itself as well as to this particular practice by which Reiki consciousness and Reiki pulsations are accessed.

Reiki can be defined as pure consciousness. It is not restricted to specific pathways in the body. When one applies hands to offer Reiki, consciousness pulsates according to the need of the receiver, like water seeking its own level. As the receiver moves toward balance, Reiki pulsations adjust and eventually become quiet. As a result, the person receiving the treatment moves towards his/her unique point of balance (as much as is possible at that time).

By enhancing our connection to primordial consciousness, Reiki changes our understanding of who we are and what is possible, while increasing our stability and groundedness.

Reiki FAQs

What happens during a Reiki treatment?
The client, fully clothed, lies on a treatment table. The practioner’s hands are gently placed on or slightly above the body in a series of positions from head to toe. Reiki passes from giver (the Reiki channel) to receiver, working on many different levels. It brings all aspects of the receiver's being into harmonious balance, according to their individual needs and desires.

Do I have to "believe" in Reiki?
You need not believe in anything to benefit from Reiki. You only have to be open-minded enough to experience treatment. Reiki is not religious or dogmatic in any way. It developed instead out of a spiritual tradition, and sits at the intersection between science and spirit.
